Wallington County Grammar School

Wallington County Grammar School

Nearest train stations: Wallington or Carshalton

was founded in 1927, this selective school of approximately 880 pupils is set in nine acres of grounds against the background of Beddington Park . The School is a foundation school in the London Borough of Sutton, situated on the main road between Sutton and Croydon. Wallington County is a grammar school. 120 pupils are selected from among the top 25% of the ability range by 11+ examination with a few more pupils admitted at 13+.

The School retains a traditional character which promotes academic achievement, personal qualities, sporting prowess and cultural pursuits. Pupils are involved in the life of the School and develop a strong sense of loyalty and commitment. Throughout there are high expectations of all those who work and study here; the pursuit of excellence pervades all that we do.

The School has a progressive outlook, reflected in current issues concerning the curriculum. The “Condensed Curriculum” at Key Stage 3 is being implemented fully; the National Curriculum for all subjects at Key Stage 3 will be completed in two years. Options choices are made at the end of Year 8, and GCSE courses begin in Year 9. Consequently three years will be devoted to Key Stage 4 allowing scope for an enhanced programme of work and the consolidation of GCSE material.

This approach reduces the pressure to complete the syllabus, releasing more time and affording greater scope for additional activities whilst improving still further GCSE results. The School's value-added results at Key Stage 3 have been ranked 7 th nationally and the 11 th best boys' school in recent years, so covering the work in two years is perfectly realistic. Innovations are usually effective because the pupils are receptive to new ideas.

At GCSE, pupils are entered for 10, 11 or 12 subjects depending on whether they study Statistics in addition to Mathematics and on whether they are entered for the three separate sciences.
