is now in its sixth year; and we have our first Year 13 students in the Sixth Form. The intention is to have a Sixth Form of about 240 students by September 2006. This will then bring the school number on roll to 1,140.
My focus, this term, has been on making sure that pupils and students are able to learn effectively in lessons and that they behave well. We have introduced a system of classroom management called Positive Discipline. This is a simple system aimed at promoting good behaviour. All staff are using the system in all lessons for Years 711.
We expect pupils to behave well in all lessons; and to follow these simple Classroom Rules, which are based on the principle of mutual respect:
- Follow instructions straight away
- Arrive on time with everything you need to work
- Listen in silence to your teachers or other pupils
- Put up your hand when you need attention
- Keep hands, feet, objects and inappropriate comments to yourself
When pupils have had six lessons in a subject and have obeyed these rules every lesson, they will be given a Merit Stamp. These Stamps count towards merit certificates and awards including money and prizes, such as a PlayStation Portable.
Most pupils will want to behave well all the time. However, if a pupil chooses to break the rules, s/he will be given a warning. Each warning that they are given has a clear consequence. Ultimately, if a pupil is given six warnings s/he will be removed from that lesson, by one of our Behaviour Officers, so that the other pupils can get on with their learning. If a pupil is removed, a letter will be sent home to let parents know.
