opened in 1960 as a Grammar School and became Comprehensive in 1977. The school's popularity was recognised in 1995 when a government grant was awarded to enable the school to expand to six forms of entry. The expansion work has enabled us to build a new teaching block and sports hall and carry out considerable refurbishment to the existing school buildings.
The school enjoys the support of parents in a number of ways. There is a substantial representation of parents on the school's Governing Body and the Friends of Vyners arrange a large number of social and fund raising events throughout the year. We see links with parents as a key feature of the success of the school and encourage parents to contact us if ever they have any questions or concerns. There is an annual consultation evening for parents and reports on progress are sent home regularly.
As a six form entry school we have over one thousand pupils in the school including about two hundred in the sixth form. Most of our pupils stay on into the sixth form where a range of subjects and courses is offered. We have a strict school uniform policy, believing that pupils' appearance is important. Each pupil who joins the school becomes a member of one of six Houses. These smaller units impart a sense of belonging which all members of the school appreciate. They are the focus for the tutorial that each pupil is placed in and also a number of House competitions which take place throughout the year.
In summary, we feel we have every right to be proud of our school. Our record of success in public examinations reflects our emphasis on academic excellence. The wide range of extracurricular opportunities reflects our commitment to the all-round development of our pupils. All this work is underpinned by a dedicated and committed team of teachers working in partnership with parents.
