The governing body's decision to become an Academy was based on its commitment to providing the best opportunities for all students - for the most able and for those needing
additional support. At Burlington Danes we believe that every student, family and member of staff has the right to teach and learn in a secure, happy community founded on mutual respect and with the improved facilities that Academy status will bring:
- specialist status in science, mathematics and the arts
- the introduction of a sixth form in September 2007
- a £15 million investment in the redevelopment of the school
- the chance to become part of an international education network through the work of ARK, our sponsor charity, which is undertaking important work for UK education
Our recently renovated art deco Burlington building with its wonderful 1930s façade sits within a large site providing 11 acres of playing fields and a range of excellent facilities. A well equipped sports hall and new fitness suite supplements the extensive outdoor area, and our recent Danes extension is fully resourced with interactive whiteboards and online technology. We believe that our students learn best when we work in the spirit of true partnership. Parents, governors and the local community are encouraged to be involved in the life of the school and students are encouraged to enrich their learning through our extensive programme of extra-curricular activities, including field trips, excursions and a full range of weekly clubs for music, drama, ICT and sports. One of the main benefits of Academy status will be the change to an extended day and our ability to offer a richer programme of activities and services for students, families and our community. At Burlington Danes, our students are treated as individuals and the unique qualities each brings to the school are celebrated. Teaching is personalised and students are encouraged to develop as independent, confident learners. Our curriculum is designed to ensure that students keep open as many options as possible for further study and employment. Students who need support in core subjects will be able to take extra courses and we have developed an excellent programme to extend and challenge students in areas where they are gifted and talented. The gifted and talented programme complements our support of students with learning difficulties, led by our inclusion team.
All students are set targets, which we review at least three times a year with parents at academic review days and parents' evenings. We also expect all students to complete daily homework tasks, which are monitored by tutors and by parents through the student journal. We run a wide range of homework clubs and study and revision programmes, but we also expect our students to play a full part in assessing and monitoring their own work. The student's voice is now a key aspect of school life, whether it is through the school council, our prefect system, or the focus groups we hold to discuss the quality and nature of their education. At Burlington Danes we challenge our students to learn and develop within a Christian community and are committed to the highest expectations for learning and behaviour.
